Bodhisattva with 1,000 Hands

Cheng Cheng, an 18 year-old hearing impaired dancer, leads the performance of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva with 1,000 Hands), the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Presented by deaf and mute dancers, the China Disabled Persons' Art Performing Troupe was set up in 1987 and has won a reputation for extraordinary performing art Wow! That's pretty cool! The Violin House

Yes, this is for real! This unique piano house was built recently in An Hui Province, China. Inside of the violin is the escalator to the building. The building displays various city plans and development prospects in an effort to draw interest into the recently developed area. Here's what the back of it looks like. Is that cool or what?

Foot Binding

Foot binding was a custom practiced on young females for approximately one thousand years in China, beginning in the 10th century and ending in the early 20th century. In Chinese foot binding, young girls’ feet, usually at age 6 but often earlier, were wrapped in tight bandages so that they could not grow and develop normally; they would, instead, break and become highly deformed, not growing past 4-6 inches. As the girl reached adulthood, her feet would remain small and dysfunctional, prone to infection, paralysis, and muscular atrophy. When I read about it in books, it sounds strange and unkind... when I see it in person, I am shocked and appalled!

Pandamonium!

One zoo in southwest China has its hands full with 16 baby pandas. The Sichuan Wolong Panda Protection and Breed Center is dealing with the results of a breeding boom -- 16 pandas have been born since July, 2006. The brood includes five sets of twins. These baby bears are just way too cute for words!
